LOVE
John 13: 34-35, "A new (changed, different) commandment (law)
I give unto you. That ye LOVE one another; as I have loved you, that ye
also love one another. By this shall ALL men know that ye are my disciples,
if ye have LOVE one to another." Love is defined as meaning strong affection
for or attachment to someone. Under the old law it was a tooth for a tooth,
etc. as found in Deut. 19:21, "And thine eye shall not pity; but
life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot
for foot."; also read Lev. 24:20; Ex. 21:24. But Jesus suffered such a
cruel death at Calvary that we may enjoy salvation that would enable us
to obey these scriptures. Matt. 5:38-47, "Ye have heard that it hath been
said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth; But I say unto you, That
ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek,
turn to him the other also ... Give to him that asketh thee, and from him
that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Ye have heard that it hath
been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy, But I say
unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them
that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute
you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for
he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain
on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what
reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your
brethren only, what do ye,-- more than others? do not even the publicans
so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is
perfect." But the old faithful patriarch' Abraham said in Gen. 13: 7-8,
"And there was a strife (a quarrel; struggle) between the herdmen of Abram's
cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite
dwelled then in the land. And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife,
I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen;
for we be brethren," In Psa. 103:12, "As far as the east is from the west,
so far hath he removed our transgressions from us." Heb. 10:17, "And their
sins and iniquities will I remember no more." In these scriptures we find
that Jesus is so willing to forgive us and never remember it against us
again; this is our example and we are to do likewise. Gal. 5:15, "But if
ye bite and devour (to consume or destroy) one another, take heed that
ye be not consumed one of another." Here the outstanding apostle Paul insisted
that we do not bite and devour one another. Isa. 5:20-21, "Woe unto them
that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light
for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter. Woe unto
them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent (sensible) in their own
sight." Phil. 2:1-4, "If there be therefore any consolation in Christ,
if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels
and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love,
being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or
vain glory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem (value highly; have
a great regard for; prize) other better than themselves. Look not every
man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others." If
we love others as these scriptures command, they will enable us to stand
judgement inspection on that great day!!!
